This 3-hour practical pool training workshop will teach students how to improve your comfort, breathhold and manage yourself better in surf wave hold downs.

Led by PADI Freediving Instructor Trainer, Marlon Quinn, this masterclass will introduce you to breathing and relaxation techniques specifically used for developing and enhancing your breathhold in stressful wave hold down situations.

Group Size: Maximum 8x

Safety Requirement: 

Before attending this workshop, it is a requirement that you have:

  1. An existing freediving certification, minimum PADI Basic Freediver or equivalent, eg AIDA 1*, Molchanov Wave 1, SSI Basic Freediver etc
  2. Can supply a copy of your existing freediving certification, and
  3. Completed and provided your health questionnaire and waiver


In this workshop you’ll benefit from becoming calmer, better connected with your body, and understand your inner mind and fears to have the confidence to enjoy bigger surf.  

Whether you're new to surfing, a seasoned campaigner, a weekend warrior, or keen to refresh your skills as as returning student you will build powerful tools to be more relaxed holding your breath and develop the skills to cope with a series of wave hold downs.

The workshop covers:

  • Discussion about previous experiences and goals for the session
  • Practicing breathing techniques for relaxation and to reduce stress
  • Breathing techniques to hold your breath longer
  • Static apnea (motionless breath-hold) on the pool surface
  • Dynamic apnea (swimming drills) on breath-hold
  • Personalised coaching to talk about your personal 'map of the breathhold' and sensations
  • Hold down recovery breathing methods
  • Rescue and safety training
  • Wave hold down simulations

Suitable for: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Surfers, Body Boarders, Lifeguards and Surf Rescue, SUP paddlers or returning students keen to refresh their skills.


Structured Workshop:

Led by your friendly expert coach, this 3-hour workshop includes warm-up exercises, practical breath-hold training and tailored instruction for repetitive drills. Followed by safety and rescue practice and discussion of lesson outcomes and continued learning opportunities.

Small Classes:

The Masterclass workshops have a maximum of 8 participants per session to ensure you get plenty of time with your coach to maximise your development. Consider 1-on-1 private lessons if you prefer.

Training Outcomes:

At the end of the session you will have learned specialised breath-hold skills, relaxation techniques, and performed a triple-hold down sequence comfortably, that our big wave surfers say is tougher than their worst and most stressful surf experience. Participants who successfully perform the criteria of the PADI Basic Freediver course requirements can choose to be certified and be issued with an e-certification from PADI.

  • Directions to YAWA Aquatic Centre, Rosebud
  • All Students must be minimum 14 years of age
  • Please arrive at the venue 10 minutes before commencement time to ensure you have enough time to check in and get settled
  • Please dress comfortably
  • Please bring a bag with your swimmers, wetsuit, mask, snorkel and weightbelt (optional), a towel and your own re-usable water bottle
  • Guests must be able to swim. Courses do not cater for people with no swimming ability. The Instructor retains the right to refuse participation in which case your attendance is forfeited
  • Guests with back, neck, or heart conditions, those who are pregnant or who have injuries/conditions that may cause a risk to their health are advised not to participate, or do so at their own risk
  • A medical statement must be submitted to attend the course
  • All participants under the age of 18 years must have a parent/guardian sign all applicable waiver/medical forms
  • Subject to minimum numbers and may be rescheduled if minimum numbers are not met
  • The supplier reserves the right to substitute the venue / pool and / or change the day’s itinerary without notice
